This paper rejects both rights and utilitarian arguments in favour of not eating animals; these arguments, Diamond maintains, are based on seeing non-human animals as having very similar capacities to humans. Diamond argues that this is the wrong place to start; we should instead consider animals as fellow creatures for whom we can have feelings such as pity. - CLARE PALMER
