Introduction : Gender Studies

Gender studies is an umbrella term under which feminist studies, women’s studies, queer studies and masculinity studies is found; sometimes involving squabbling about who gets to the hold the umbrella’s handle. Gender studies produces some of the most enduring alliances with animal studies, not least because both are driven to explore the margins of the ‘properly’ human and the social forces exerted by that ideal. In making a start on a living bibliography of gender studies/animal studies work, I’ve emphasized more of the ‘classics’ partly in recognition of what Susan Fraiman has labeled ‘pussy panic’….
