A foundational book for more recent Greco-Roman scholarship on animals. Organized by type of animal and the various functions animals served in ancient Rome with a decent selection of images as well. This work lays out the “facts” of Roman attitudes and ideas about animals from the literary and visual evidence that have survived. A “must read” for acquiring the “facts” about Roman approaches to animals from which more complex engagements have evolved. - SUSAN A. CURRY
