This book grew out of an article in the New York Times, and has probably been the most influential single book in animal ethics, the inspiration of the animal liberation movement. Although Singer is a utilitarian, that’s not really evident in Animal Liberation, which wears its philosophy lightly – though does use the term speciesism. Much of this book is spent detailing the animal suffering caused by practices such as industrial farming and scientific research. - CLARE PALMER
