In the modern era of animal ethics, this is the classic text that develops a case for the rights of animals. Regan argues that mammals, at least, have inherent value and basic negative rights. They should not be treated merely as a means to human ends. This leads him to an abolitionist view on animal experimentation and meat eating. - CLARE PALMER
