The book’s informing question—“What do animal stories have to tell us about human beings?’’—is not aligned with animal studies’ commitment to disaggregating animal importance from human importance. The book is, however, very useful to animal studies scholars for its deeply informed analysis of how animals mean in differing genres of animal writing, and how these genres cross-pollinate during the later Middle Ages. - SUSAN CRANE
