Introduction : Continental Philosophy

There are so many suggestions to include here that it is both a fun and fraught exercise. I have set some relatively arbitrary self-imposed limitations in selecting books for this list, and they include temporal boundaries (how far back should I go in incorporating continental philosophy?), offsetting the percentage of a book that is actually devoted to animals versus its influence in animal studies (looking at you, Heidegger), and what should or shouldn’t be included as continental philosophy (a perpetual source of debate). In a short list I’ve inevitably had to leave out many works that deserve inclusion, and this includes from fields where continental philosophy intersects and merges with science and technology studies, psychoanalysis, speculative realism, political theory, critical race theory, disability studies, LGBTQ studies, environmental humanities, film and media studies, posthumanism, literary theory, and much more.
