INSTRUCTIONS
Please read and follow these instructions as you add to the Living Bibliography of Animal Studies (LBAS).+ +In the instructions below ‘reference’ refers to any book, article, chapter, film etc.
Crucially:
DO NOT remove or alter any references or comments added by any other contributor. The aim of LBAS is to be cumulative, and so new comments should not replace old ones but should be added below them.
ALWAYS add a comment when you put a new reference on the website. The aim of LBAS is not to be simply a list of references, but to offer users a commentary on those texts as well.
ALWAYS add your name after any comment your add on LBAS. This allows the website to tag your comments, and so to bring them all up when searched for. It will also be interesting for all users to see who has said what about which text.
To request access to the wiki
Please follow the ‘Create Account’ link on the home page and complete the form. You will receive an email confirming your access once this is received. You can then log on to the website and begin to contribute to the living bibliography.
To add a reference
First, search for the reference you want to add using a recognizable short version of the title, using the search tool on the sidebar of the home page to see if the reference has already been added to the bibliography. This search term can become the title of the page, so please use a short title version of the full title. A recognizable short version of the title might be: Animal Estate for The Animal Estate: The English and Other Creatures in the Victorian Age. Please do not use 'The' or 'A/An' when searching for the text you wish to enter as this will mean it will be alphabetically listed under 'The' or 'A/An'. Hence Animal Estate would be the search term/listing title rather than The Animal Estate.
If the reference is already on the wiki
1. If the title does exist you will be taken to a link to the existing reference. Click on the title of the reference and you will be taken to its page. There you will see the full publication details and existing comments (as below). To add your comments to this page click on the ‘Edit’ link next to ‘Comments’ .
2. Add your comments beneath the existing one(s), and include your name at the end of the comments you add.
3. If you want to include the reference in a different category to the one it has already been placed in, use the same format as the existing link but change the category: so, in the page below, you could the reference to a new category by adding, for example, in a new line after your comments. This would automatically link the reference to this category and its bibliography and maintain the old link to the Art History category. All existing categories are listed on the website sidebar - you must use exactly the same title (with the same capitalization etc.) if you want to include a title under it. The system would not recognize 'Victorian studies' for example, because of the lower case s. (Please see below if you would like to add a new category to the wiki.)
4. Press ‘save page’ to upload your additional comments.
If the reference you type into search is not on the wiki
You will be greeted with this
Just click on the red text to create a new entry and you will see an area for you to enter text.
Using the format below – enter the appropriate Information.

You MUST include all aspects of the reference for it to be a valid entry: i.e.
Publication details: Author, title, publication details (as in the style above), page refs where relevant;
Comment: with your name (in capitals) at the end of the comment;
Category: this must be typed in exactly as it is in the sidebar: so 'Medieval studies' would not be picked up by the 'Medieval Studies' category because of the lower case s.
Any contribution that lacks any of these details will not be valid in this system. Please do not just add the publication details and leave it at that. The living bibliography needs more than that to work.
Once you have added all the required information using the formatting required you can then Preview the page to make sure everything is OK before clicking Save page.
If you at some point want to rename the page (which is the title of the reference) to, say, remove a “The” from start of the page then do the following – go to the page in question
Along the top row of buttons select MOVE
Using the settings shown below just change the title in the text box as required and click ‘move page’.
The page has now been renamed and automatically moves its alphabetical reference in the Categories page.
To add a new category to the sidebar on the main page
The aim of LBAS is not to proliferate bibliographies for multiple areas just for the sake of it, so if you think the reference you wish to add should go into, say, the category ‘Early Modern Studies’ it might be sensible to add it to the existing category ‘Renaissance Studies’ instead rather than start up a new list. The danger of too many lists is that links might be made invisible.
However, it is likely that new categories will be needed as the bibliography develops (these might be scholarly fields – Postcolonial studies, for example; or areas of inquiry such as Companion Animals). If you wish to add a new category to the sidebar and to begin a new bibliography please email Erica Fudge: erica.fudge@strath.ac.uk with the title of the category you would like to see added. She will add it asap, and a confirmation message sent to you. You will then be able to add references to this new category as outlined above.
