DeGrazia’s book was one of the first to take very seriously scientific work on animal minds (such as whether animals can have beliefs, feelings, language and self awareness) and using this to inform the ethical arguments that follow. Although work on animal minds has moved on since DeGrazia wrote, this is still a thorough analysis and a very useful book. - CLARE PALMER
